About Us
Welcome to The Year of Democracy.
The Year of Democracy is an attempt to raise awareness and debate around issues such as; free speech, torture, political correctness and political systems.
University is a place we come to study, enjoy ourselves and grow as individuals. Part of that process comes from debate and clear thinking. The Year of democracy,
by providing speaking engagements and debates, aims to aid that process.
There are many issues in the world right now which force us to confront some uncomfortable truths. We are living through the ‘War on Terror’
which is a war with no boundaries and apparently no rules. Is the torture of one justified to save the lives of many or have we merely
dehumanised and regressed to medieval practices? It is these sort of questions DUSA is challenging you to think about by providing two
speakers who were detainees in Guantanamo Bay detention centre.
DUSA wants to push the limits of free speech and has already provided the ever controversial George Galloway.
Keep your eye out for our ‘free speech boxes’ at Year of Democracy events and our ‘rant competition’ which is
500 words of your own opinions - with the winner receiving a cash prize of 100 pound.
I hope you have enjoyed the Year of Democracy thus far and I’ll see you at the events this semester.
